HOMELEIGH 600kl ELEVATED WATER TOWER

This stunning East London water tower brought essential services to a nearby low cost housing project with an award winning lift technique.

This project cast the shaft and bowl of the Homeleigh water tower simultaneously and then lifted the bowl into place using steel cables.

The total weight of the bowl was a massive 640t. This was the first time that any lift of this magnitude had been attempted in South Africa.

The lift was done in six phases and was developed in response to a shortage of steel scaffolding. The 25m lift was undertaken with four 350t hydraulic jacks mounted on top of the shaft and took five days to complete after a week of preparations. The team had to contend with windspeeds of up to 70km per hour during the lift.
